Dispatch of Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Team in response to the Crash of an Air Asia Plane

1. In the wake of the disappearance of an Air Asia plane (QZ8501) on December 28, the Government of Japan has been consulting with the Government of Indonesia regarding its assistance. Today, based on the request made by the Government of Indonesia, the Government of Japan decided to dispatch Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Team composed by two escort vessels and three helicopters of Maritime Self-Defense Force which are travelling in Southeast Asia.

2. Following this decision, an advance team of the JDR Team consisting of 5 officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense and Japan International Cooperation Agency will depart for Jakarta, Indonesia by the end of today.

3. The Government of Japan will continue to coordinate with the Government of Indonesia regarding specific scope of work and period of dispatch of the main JDR Team based on development of search and rescue operations.
