Emergency Assistance to Cabo Verde in response to the Eruption of Pico de Fogo volcano

  1. 1. On December 19, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods worth 3.5 million yen (generators and its related items) to the Republic of Cabo Verde, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the eruption of Pico de Fogo volcano.

    2. Since the occurrence of eruption on November 23, the volcanic activities continue with increased lava flow causing a power failure and serious damage to populated and agricultural land. According to the report by the UN Office in Cabo Verde, 100 buildings were destroyed and 1080 people were displaced from their home, as of December 11.

    3. In response to the request from the Government of the Republic of Cabo Verde, the Government of Japan has decided to extend the assistance, from a humanitarian point of view as well as in light of friendly relations between the two countries.
