Energy Charter Treaty Forum

1. On 21 November, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) will hold the “Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) Forum” in Media Hall, International Exchange Center, Odaiba, in cooperation with the Energy Charter Secretariat (ECS).

2. Inviting leading law practitioners and researchers who have great familiarity with this treaty from home and abroad, the forum will focus on deepening the understanding of investment dispute settlement mechanisms under the ECT in the form of panel discussion.

3. For this event, H.E. Urban Rusnák, the Secretary General of the ECS, will pay an official visit to Japan upon invitation of MOFA.

【Energy Charter Treaty】

Coming into effect in 1998, the ECT has been a multilateral legal framework that includes such principles as open market for the trade and transit of the energy resources, products and equipment as well as the promotion and protection of investment in the energy field. 47 countries and 1 international organization (EU) are the parties to this treaty. Japan ratified the ECT in 2002.
