Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Election of the Parliamentary Elections of Ukraine

1. The Government of Japan welcomes that the parliamentary elections in Ukraine on October 26 were held in a generally free and peaceful manner excluding some areas in the eastern part of Ukraine and Crimea.

2. The Government of Japan believes respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as three factors are important for the peace and stability of Ukraine: (1) improving the economic situation; (2) restoring democracy; and (3) promoting domestic dialogue and unification. The Government of Japan expects that the latest elections will mark a further step towards the restoration of democracy in Ukraine.

3. The Government of Japan sent 10 election observers to support the fair holding of the elections. We have received a preliminary report from the election observers that voting and vote counting on the whole were conducted in a peaceful manner and that the tallying process was transparent.

4. The Government of Japan expresses its hope for the swift formation of the new parliament and the government in Ukraine, leading to the progress towards the resolution of various issues. The Government of Japan will thus continue to support Ukraine in achieving peace and stability in the country.
