Joint Exercise in Counter Piracy activities between Japan and EU
1. On Thursday 16 October, a joint exercise in counter piracy activities between the European Union Naval Force(EU NAVFOR) Somalia- Operation Atalanta and the Self-Defence Forces was held in the Gulf of Aden.
2. This is the first joint exercise between SDFs and EU Naval Force engaging in counter piracy activities. The exercise was conducted based on the mutual agreement of the both leaders on the occasion of the 22nd Japan-EU summit, which was held in Brussels in May this year. The agreement was followed by coordination of planning on joint exercise.
3. Japan and the EU are the global partner sharing common values of democracy, the rule of law and human rights. Japan intends to continue advancing specific cases of cooperation with EU in a broad of range of fields.
