Courtesy Call by Mr. Philippe Gautier, Registrar of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), on Mr. Yasuhide Nakayama, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan

On October 16 (Thu), Mr. Philippe Gautier, Registrar of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), paid a courtesy call on Mr. Yasuhide Nakayama, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, for about 30 minutes from 5:40 p.m. The outline of the meeting is as follows.

1. At the outset, State Minister Nakayama welcomed the first ever visit to Japan of the Registrar of ITLOS. State Minister Nakayama stated that Japan, strongly emphasizing the rule of law at sea, pays tribute to ITLOS which has made important contributions to the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes under the leadership of former President Shunji Yanai for last three years, and expresses the expectations for further success of Registrar and for the development of ITLOS.

2. State Minister Nakayama further confirmed the commitment by Japan, being the largest financial contributor to ITLOS, to continue promoting the rule of law at sea through its support to ITLOS.

3. Registrar briefed State Minister on the recent activities of ITLOS, and appreciated Japan’s support and contributions to ITLOS.
