Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the United States accession to the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP)

1. On September 22 the United States acceded to the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP), becoming the 20th party of the Agreement.

2. The ReCAAP is an agreement that Japan took the initiative in creating, based on the perspective that regional cooperation is needed to respond to the piracy problem, and Japan consistently supports activities based on the ReCAAP.

3. The Government of Japan welcomes that the U.S., an important maritime nation of the region, has become a party of the ReCAAP, and expects that this will contribute to the strengthening of the activities of the ReCAAP.
