Meeting between Mr. Minoru Kiuchi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, President of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

1. On September 9, commencing at 2:20 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Minoru Kiuchi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, received Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, President of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), who is visiting Japan upon invitation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

2. State Minister Kiuchi welcomed President Aliu to Japan and expressed respect for President Aliu’s leadership on the safe and orderly growth of international civil aviation, along with stating that the Government of Japan also intends to coordinate and cooperate closely with President Aliu. In response, President Aliu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit Japan for the first time as a result of the invitation by the Government of Japan, along with stating that Japan is an important ICAO partner, and Japan’s contributions thus far as the second-largest donor to the ICAO are encouraging and he hopes Japan will continue to fulfill an important role.

3. Additionally, State Minister Kiuchi explained that on September 8, Ms. Naoko Ueda arrived at Montreal as the first Japanese woman appointed as the Representative of the Government of Japan to the Council of ICAO. President Aliu welcomed that and also said he intends to continue to coordinate and cooperate closely with the Government of Japan, including Ms. Naoko Ueda.

4. In addition, during the courtesy call the two sides also exchanged views on initiatives at the ICAO in light of recent developments, such as the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight in July this year.
