Emergency Grant Aid for Improvement of Humanitarian Situation in Eastern Ukraine
1. Today, on September 5, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency grant aid of USD 300,000 through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Eastern Ukraine.
2. In Ukraine, in addition to the political crisis since November last year, activities by separatists have been intensified in Donetsk and Luhansk, eastern Ukraine, since early April and battles have been staged between the separatists and the Government of Ukraine. Under such circumstances, increase in refugees from Eastern Ukraine and the rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation have been reported.
3. The Government of Japan already provided approximately USD 270,000 of emergency grant aid for internally displaced people in Ukraine in June this year. However, in order to deal with the recently deteriorating humanitarian situation in eastern Ukraine, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency grant aid this time.
4. The Government of Japan hopes that the grant aid contributes to the stabilization of Ukraine through this cooperation.
