Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Approval of Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein as the next United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights by the UN General Assembly

1. The Government of Japan welcomes that Prince Zeid Ra’ad Zeid Al-Hussein (Jordan’s Ambassador to the UN) was officially approved as the next UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at the UN General Assembly’s plenary session on June 16.

2. Prince Zeid possesses many years of experience in UN work and has been addressing the issue of peace in the international community, including the field of human rights. The Government of Japan expects that as the first UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to be selected from the Asia region, Prince Zeid will exercise strong leadership following his new posting in September, and intends to cooperate with the next UN High Commissioner.

3. Additionally, the Government of Japan intends to deal with human rights issues in the international community through stronger cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
