Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the Second Round of Presidential Election in Afghanistan

1. The Government of Japan welcomes the holding of the second round of voting in the presidential election in Afghanistan as scheduled on June 14. The Government of Japan also expresses its respect for the Afghan citizens who went to the polls despite the severe security situation, for the security forces who maintained security during the voting, and for all those involved in carrying out the voting.

2. The Government of Japan hopes that the process up to the announcement of the final results, including counting and tallying ballots as well as responding to complaints, will proceed in a fair, prompt and peaceful manner.

3. The Government of Japan will continue to maintain a cooperative relationship with the new and fairly-elected president, and support Afghanistan’s efforts towards the stability and development of Afghanistan.
