Statement by Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Announcement of the New Palestinian Government

1. The Government of Japan welcomes that the new government was formed under President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority on June 2 and that President Abbas expressed commitment to 1) nonviolence to Israel, 2) recognition of Israel, 3) acceptance of previous agreements and obligations (Quartet principles).

2. The Government of Japan strongly expects that the division within Palestine will end under the leadership of President Abbas while the new government makes further efforts to advance the Middle East peace process with Israel. Japan strongly hopes that negotiations between Israel and Palestine will resume soon to realize a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace based on a two-state solution.

3. Japan intends to continue supporting the peace process both politically and economically, including the promotion of the “Corridor of Peace and Prosperity” initiative and the “Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD)”
