Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Situation in Fiji

1. The Government of Japan welcomes the recent appointment of members of the electoral commission by the Fiji Government for the general election which is scheduled for this year and the resignation of Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama’s as Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces as well as other related movements as a steady progress of the democratisation process in Fiji.

2. Moreover, Japan appreciates the Ministerial Contact Group (MCG) of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) visited Fiji recently and confirmed the steady progress for the election.

3. Japan expects the election of Fiji will be undertaken by fair and democratic manner. The Government of Japan intends to cooperate on actions for democratisation of Fiji in a positive manner.
