Signing of the Treaty Between Japan and the Federative Republic of Brazil on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons
1. H. E. Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and H. E. Mr. André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Japan, signed the “Treaty Between Japan and the Federative Republic of Brazil on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons” in Tokyo on January 24.
2. This Treaty sets out procedures between Japan and Brazil for transfering persons on whom sentences of imprisonment have been imposed by a court of the other country back to their own country, provided certain conditions are met.
3. By providing the opportunity for Japanese sentenced persons sentenced in Brazil and Brazilian sentenced persons sentenced in Japan to serve their sentences in their home countries, the conclusion of this Treaty will contribute to facilitating the betterment, rehabilitation and social reintegration of these sentenced persons, and is expected to contribute to advancing bilateral cooperation in the field of criminal law.
4. The Treaty is scheduled to be submitted to the Diet for approval.
