Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Presidential Election in the Republic of Maldives

1. The Government of Japan welcomes that the presidential election in the Maldives was held peacefully and successfully despite difficulties such as delays of the process, and that Mr. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom was elected as President in the runoff vote on November 16th.

2. Japan expects under the new President’s leadership, all the people concerned will be united in making efforts for further development of the Maldives including advancement of the democratic process.

3. Japan will continue to support these efforts taken by the Maldives and work to further develop our cooperative relationship.
