Emergency Assistance to the Republic of the Philippines for Earthquake Damage

1. On Tuesday October 29, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods worth 38 million yen (tents, plastic sheets) to the Republic of the Philippines through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request following the serious damage from a strong earthquake that hit the central part of the Philippines.

2. On October 15, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Bohol Island, situated in the central part of the Philippines, causing serious damage including many casualties and displaced people. According to the announcement of the Philippine Government on October 29, 218 people were dead, 768 people are injured and the total number of those affected is more than 3,200,000 people.

3. In response to the request from the Philippine Government, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance for humanitarian aid for those affected in light of friendly relations between Japan and the Philippines.
