Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Situation in Fiji (Release of the New Constitution)

1. Japan welcomes the release of the new constitution by the government of the Republic of Fiji as an important step for the democracy in Fiji, and we expect that the process for democracy will take concrete progress towards the general election which is scheduled to be held in 2014.
2. Maintaining close dialogue with the Fiji government, Japan intends to cooperate on actions for the democratization of Fiji in a positive manner, by seriously considering the support for the election.
