Visit of the IAEA Delegation to Japan for the Second Regulatory Review on the Handling of ALPS Treated Water at the TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station
From 16th to 20th of January, an IAEA delegation, composed of IAEA officials and international experts, visited Japan to conduct a review of regulatory aspects of the discharge of ALPS treated water at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS).
- The purpose of this visit was to conduct a review of regulatory aspects of the proposed discharge of the ALPS treated water, following the signing of the Terms of Reference (TOR) on Reviews of Safety Aspects of Handling ALPS Treated Water at TEPCO’s FDNPS in July, 2021. The visit was the second IAEA regulatory review mission to Japan for this purpose.
- The delegation and the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) conducted follow-up discussions related to the contents of the report on the regulatory review of handling ALPS treated water published in June 2022. The report of this week's review mission is expected to be issued by the IAEA within three months later.
- On 17 January, a part of the delegation visited the TEPCO’s FDNPS to observe the NRA’s inspection to facilities related to the discharge of ALPS treated water.
- The Government of Japan will continue to provide necessary information to the IAEA. The Government of Japan also remains committed to making efforts to promote better understanding in the international community regarding the handling of ALPS treated water.
[Reference 1] ALPS treated water is water which is processed by devices such as ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System) to ensure that the concentration of the radioactive materials other than tritium surely meet the regulatory standards for safety. In addition, it is planned that ALPS treated water will then be sufficiently diluted before the discharges into the sea so that concentration of all radioactive materials including tritium will be far below the regulatory standards for safety.
