Ministerial Meeting of the UN Group of Friends of Mediation

Mr. UESUGI Kentaro, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the UN Group of Friends of Mediation (on-line) on February 2. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- Mr. Uesugi stated that Japan strongly supports the active efforts to carry out mediation and good offices by the Secretary-General, his Special Representatives and his Envoys in the United Nations. Mr. Uesugi also expressed appreciation that discussions on mediation have been promoted in a way that raises awareness on inclusivity and long-term perspectives. Furthermore, he outlined Japan’s contributions and offered a continued commitment to work towards sustaining peace including through mediation.
- The meeting was co-chaired by H.E. Mr. Pekka HAAVISTO, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Finland and H.E. Mr. Mevlüt ÇAVUŞOĞLU, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey. H.E. Ms. Rosemary DICARLO, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, and foreign ministers and other representatives from member states and organizations of the Group of Friends also attended the meeting.
- Recognizing the importance of women's participation and local ownership for sustaining peace, the participants exchanged views on efforts to promote mediation and the role of the UN in the peaceful resolution of disputes in light of the current global situation.
