Japan-Israel Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On January 14th, commencing at 4:35 PM for 15 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Yair LAPID, Alternate Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister Lapid congratulated Minister Hayashi on his appointment, and the two Minsters concurred to cooperate toward further development of the bilateral relations, seizing the opportunity of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.
- With regard to the Middle East Peace, reiterating Japan's position to support a two-state solution, Minister Hayashi appreciated Minister Lapid’s posture of actively engaging the Palestinian side, including the “Economy for Security” plan for the Gaza Strip, and stated that he would attentively follow the progress of the plan. Minister Hayashi expressed his hope that confidence building measures respectively taken by Israeli and Palestinian sides would lead to an easing of tensions and the stability in the region.
- Minister Hayashi requested understanding and cooperation from Israeli side for Japan’s assistance projects toward Palestine, such as the “Corridor for Peace and Prosperity” initiative. Minister Lapid, in response, highly valued Japan’s assistance and expressed his willingness to continue cooperation.
- The two Ministers had a candid exchange of views on bilateral cooperation in various areas, and concurred that they would continue to work closely together.
