The National Assembly election in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
(Statement by Foreign Press Secretary YOSHIDA Tomoyuki)
December 8, 2020
- On December 6, 2020 (local time), the ruling coalition declared victory in the Venezuelan National Assembly election in which major opposition parties did not participate arguing that the election was not free and fair in accordance with the Constitution. On the other hand, people in Venezuela, including major opposition parties, and the international community have raised various doubts about the legitimacy of the electoral process, and pointed out that a broad participation of the Venezuelan people, including major opposition parties, was not realized in the election. Japan expresses deep concern about the fact that doubts were raised as to whether a free and fair election was held in Venezuela, which Japan has repeatedly called for.
- Japan calls for peaceful and constructive efforts towards restoring democracy in Venezuela in order to address the deteriorating economic, social and humanitarian situation in the country. From this perspective, Japan strongly hopes that the democracy in Venezuela will be recovered expeditiously and peacefully through free and fair elections with a broad participation of the Venezuelan people.
