Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs on the Adoption of the Resolution by the United Nations Security Council on Syria

1 On December 19 (December 18, New York Time), the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2254 regarding a political solution in the situation in Syria. Japan welcomes the adoption of the resolution and expresses its respect for the efforts taken by the countries concerned and Mr. Staffan de Mistura, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria.
2 A political settlement between the concerned parties is indispensable to a stable Syria. In accordance with this resolution, Japan strongly expects that negotiations between the Syrian government and the opposition will start, and that political processes including a nationwide ceasefire in Syria will be implemented, which will lead to improvement of the situation in Syria.
3 As a new non-permanent member from 2016, Japan will contribute to discussions within the United Nations Security Council Japan will also continue to make efforts to improve and stabilize Syria's situation through Japan's strengths such as humanitarian assistance, in close cooperation with other members of the UNSC and the international community.
