Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) Group of Eminent Persons (GEM) Meeting in Hiroshima

1 A meeting of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) Group of Eminent Persons (GEM) was held in Hiroshima City from August 24 to 25, under the auspices of the CTBT Organization (CTBTO) Secretariat.
2 The opening session was attended from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Mr. Kazuyuki Nakane, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, who read a greeting(PDF)
on behalf of Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs.
3 Ten members of the GEM attended the meeting, including Dr. William J. Perry, former United States Secretary of Defense, Lord Desmond Browne, former United Kingdom Secretary of State for Defense, and Mr. Nobuyasu Abe, vice-chairmanof the Japan Atomic Energy Commission. A discussion took place on strategies for promoting the entry into force of the CTBT, and the Hiroshima Declaration(PDF)
was issued as a compilation of the GEM's thoughts.
