The Eleventh Asian Senior-level Talks on Non-Proliferation (ASTOP-XI)

- Ministry of Foreign Affairs held the Eleventh Asian Senior-level Talks on Non-Proliferation (ASTOP-XI) on Wednesday, January 14 at Mita Kaigisho (Mita Conference Hall) in Tokyo. Senior level government officials in charge of non-proliferation policies from the ASEAN member countries, Australia, Canada, China, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan, the host, participated in the meeting.
- Participants exchanged views on topics such as regional nuclear issues including North Korean nuclear issue, maintaining and strengthening of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime including ways to strengthen IAEA safeguards system and universalization of IAEA additional protocol, strengthening of nuclear security implementation.
- Participants also discussed the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1540, strengthening of strategic trade control, universalization of Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), and shared the necessity of continuous efforts on such counter proliferation activities.
- ASTOP provides with an important opportunity for all senior officials from Asian countries and those countries with a common interest in the security of Asian region to candidly exchange information and views on non-proliferation issues in a comprehensive manner. Participants shared their efforts for non-proliferation with other participants and had an active discussion.
