Participation in the Freedom Online Coalition

1. On April 25, Japan became a member country of the Freedom Online Coalition.

2. On April 28 and 29 (same days local time), the Freedom Online Coalition Conference was held in Tallinn, capital city of the Republic of Estonia. Mr. Jun Shimmi, Deputy Director-General of Foreign Policy Bureau, Ambassador in charge of Cyber Policy and Ambassador in charge of UN affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the Conference representing Japan, which has newly joined the Coalition.

3. This Conference was held chiefly by the member countries of the Freedom Online Coalition in order to have discussion based on the point of view that freedom of expression and other fundamental human rights that people enjoy offline should be equally protected online.

4. The Government of Japan intends to cooperate closely with other member coutries of the Coalition and secure freedom and human rights in cyberspace, so that people all over the world can enjoy the great benefit of the Internet.
