On April 7, commencing at 9:00 a.m. for 30 minutes, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Nobuo Kishi received a courtesy call from the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights delegation, which is visiting Japan at the invitation of the Government of Japan. An overview of the courtesy call is as follows.

1. Senior Vice-Minister Kishi welcomed the visit to Japan by the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights, along with stating that he hopes this visit will deepen the delegation’s understanding of Japan’s human rights efforts. Senior Vice-Minister Kishi said that by coming together as one to realize universal values such as freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, ASEAN will contribute to the peace and stability of the entire region. He said it is from that perspective that stronger dialogue and cooperation on promoting human rights were confirmed in the Five Principles of Japan’s ASEAN Diplomacy announced by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation adopted at the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit Meeting last year, and that he wants the visit to Japan by the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights to be an opportunity to strengthen Japan-ASEAN cooperation on human rights.
2. In response, H.E. Mr. Kyaw Tint Swe, the leader of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights delegation to Japan, expressed gratitude for the invitation to visit Japan, and stated that the delegation wants to learn Japan’s good practices with regard to efforts on human rights issues and promote further cooperation with Japan on human rights issues.
3. Senior Vice-Minister Kishi and the delegation also exchanged views on women’s empowerment, trafficking in persons and the rights of persons with disabilities.
