Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the Presidential Election in Georgia

1. The Government of Japan welcomes that the presidential election in Georgia on October 27 was conducted in a peaceful and democratic manner, and congratulates H.E. Dr. Giorgi Margvelashvili, on being elected as President of Georgia.

2. The Government of Japan supports a positive evaluation by the international election observation missions, including the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe / Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE / ODIHR), which states that the election was well-organized and conducted in a peaceful and constructive atmosphere with a high transparency. Observers from the Japanese government who joined the OSCE/ODIHR mission also reported that the election was fairly conducted according to a rule with a reasonable degree of transparency.

3. The Government of Japan expects that under newly-elected President Margvelashvili, all political forces in Georgia will work together with a view to promoting stability and development of the country, which shares such fundamental values as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
