Courtesy call on Foreign Minister MOTEGI by Ms. Julie Bishop, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Myanmar

On December 1, commencing at 2:40 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from Ms. Julie Bishop, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Myanmar, who is visiting Japan at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI welcomed her visit and expressed his respect to Special Envoy Bishop’s efforts on the situation in Myanmar and grave concern over the deteriorating situation in Myanmar. He also explained Japan’s efforts towards resolving the situation, such as urging Myanmar military to improve the situation and implementing humanitarian assistance for the people of Myanmar. In response, Special Envoy Bishop highlighted Japan’s important role in addressing the situation in Myanmar and stated that she highly valued Japan’s efforts so far.
- Special Envoy Bishop explained the initiatives of the UN since the coup occurred in Myanmar and future prospects. In response, Minister MOTEGI expressed his hope that the UN would play an active role in improving the situation in Myanmar. Both sides concurred to continue working in close coordination on the situation in Myanmar.
