Japan-Australia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On October 19, commencing at 9:40 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Commonwealth of Australia. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Kamikawa expressed her condolences to the person of Australia and her bereaved families who fell victim to the terror attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian militants, and Minister Wong expressed her appreciation.
  2. Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan has unequivocally condemned the terror attacks and has been paying close attention to the situation with deep concern as the tension in the situation increases. In response, Minister Wong explained Australia's diplomatic and other efforts to the incident.
  3. The two ministers concurred on the importance of improving the humanitarian situation in the Gaza strip. Minister Kamikawa explained that Japan will provide Emergency Humanitarian Assistance of total amount of 10 million US dollars through international organizations.The two ministers also concurred to coordinate on securing the safety of the respective nationals.
  4. The two ministers concurred to continue to closely coordinate on various issues of the international community, including the situation in the Middle East.
