Meeting between Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Kamikawa and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

On October 17th, commencing at 11:45 a.m., for over an hour, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, exchanged views over lunch with the Honorable Hillary Clinton, Former Secretary of State of the United States of America, upon the invitation of the Honorable Rahm Emanuel, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Kamikawa welcomed Former Secretary Clinton, and stated that she is delighted to reunite with the Former Secretary, and to exchange opinions. In response, Former Secretary Clinton expressed that she is delighted for the reunion, and stated congratulations on Minister Kamikawa’s appointment as the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.
- The two sides exchanged their views on WPS and policies for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Minister Kamikawa introduced that after the establishment of parliamentary league on WPS, and its dialogues with countries that have advanced WPS initiatives and approaches toward the government, a domestic structure to advance WPS is underway. Minister Kamikawa stated that she would like to further strengthen efforts on WPS. Former Secretary Clinton expressed her support, and stated that she greatly admires the efforts by Minister Kamikawa.
- The two sides exchanged their views on regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East, Ukraine, and East Asia. The two sides concurred on the importance of WPS in discussing these regional issues as they would most influence the women and children.
