Dialogue with the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance in Connection with the Discharge of Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) Treated Water from TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the Sea

On October 10, an online dialogue between Japanese and Russian ministries and agencies was held regarding the impact of the discharge of ALPS treated water from TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the sea on Japanese aquatic products.

  1. Officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Fisheries Agency, Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Nuclear Regulation Authority, on the Japanese side and officials from the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, National Center for Safety of Aquatic Fisheries Products and Aquaculture, and Primorsky Interregional Veterinary Laboratory, on the Russian side, attended the dialogue.
  2. This dialogue was held at the suggestion of the Russian side for the schedule, in response to the press release issued by the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance, dated on September 26.
  3. In this dialogue, the Japanese side explained the inspection methods for radioactive materials including tritium in Japanese aquatic products which the Russian side showed its interest, and explained the safety of Japanese aquatic products based on scientific evidence.
  4. The relevant agencies of both countries shared the view to continue the dialogue in the future. Japan will continue to provide explanations based on scientific evidence to Russia in a highly transparent manner and in good faith.
