On July 6, commencing at 4:00 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, received a courtesy call from Mr. Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who is visiting Japan to participate in the G7 Justice Ministers’ Meeting and other meetings. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Minister Hayashi welcomed cooperation between Japan and the UNDP on global issues, such as climate change, and support for Ukraine, among other issues. In particular, Minister Hayashi conveyed Japan’s intent to provide support for Ukraine taking into account the needs of its people. In response, Administrator Steiner expressed his appreciation for Japan's consistent support for UNDP in providing assistance to Ukraine and Afghanistan, as well as other countries, In addition, Administrator Steiner looked forward to further strengthening the partnership between the UNDP and Japan in a wide range of areas including climate change.
  2. Minister Hayashi expressed his high regard for the UNDP’s role in promoting human security, while mentioning key points of Japan’s new Development Cooperation Charter, which makes human security in the new era one of its basic policies. The two sides exchanged views on a wide range of matters, including the importance of the Humanitarian-Development-Peace nexus and the nature of development policy. The two sides also concurred to deepen discussions on strengthening cooperation between Japan and UNDP, making use of the Strategic Policy Dialogue between the Government of Japan and UNDP, and other fora.

The UNDP is an important partner for Japan in the promotion of the development agenda, including as the co-organizer of TICAD. Japan is working together with the UNDP to resolve global challenges such as promoting and spreading human security, health (Universal Health Coverage (UHC)), gender equality, and supporting measures against climate change.
