Video Conference between Foreign Minister Hayashi and H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency
On April 12, commencing at 4:30 p.m., Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a video conference with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), for approximately 30 minutes. The overview is as follows.
- Minister Hayashi stated that Japan has always valued Director General Grossi’s efforts and would like to continue to work closely with him.
- Minister Hayashi expressed his deep concern about nuclear safety and security in Ukraine under a serious threat due to Russia’s aggression and reaffirmed his continued support for the IAEA’s efforts. The two sides also discussed issues such as nuclear issues of Iran and North Korea and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and confirmed that Japan and the IAEA will continue to work closely.
- Minister Hayashi expressed his gratitude for the IAEA’s activities, such as safety and regulatory reviews on ALPS treated water, and stated that Japan will continue to take steps in a sincere and transparent manner in handling ALPS treated water so as to gain further understanding from the international community.
The IAEA is an international organization established in July 1957 that implements safeguards for the purposes of promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and preventing the diversion of nuclear energy for military purposes. It currently has 176 Member States (as of January 2023).
