The 38th Meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Forum

The 38th meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Forum was held in Tokyo on Tuesday March 28.

  1. Since its inception in 1977, the ASEAN-Japan Forum has been held once a year in principle among SOM Leaders of ASEAN and Japan to discuss cooperation between ASEAN and Japan.
  2. This year’s forum was co-chaired by Mr. YAMADA Shigeo, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Mr.Sarun Charoensuwan, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, the ASEAN Country Coordinator for Japan, and attended by representatives from the ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat. A representative from the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, which ASEAN agreed to admit to be a member of ASEAN in principle, also attended the forum as an observer.
  3. This year's forum, which marked a historic milestone of the 50th commemorative year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, featured a lively exchange of views to further strengthen ASEAN-Japan relations in preparation for the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit to be held in Tokyo in December. The participants also exchanged views on regional and international affairs.
