Japan-Russia Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On August 11, commencing at 5:00 p.m. for 1 hour, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.E. Mr. Lavrov, Sergey Viktorovich, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. The overview is as follows.
- The two Ministers discussed bilateral relations, such as negotiations on a peace treaty, joint economic activities on the Four Northern Islands, the Four-Island Exchange Program and other programs, the economy, people-to-people exchanges, and security.
- The two Ministers shared the recognition that it is important to promote consultations and cooperation between Japan and Russia in a broad range of fields and that addressing global issues such as climate change is a common concern of both countries. The two Ministers also exchanged views on the possibility of further Japan-Russia cooperation.
- The two Ministers shared the view that Japan and Russia will continue close communication and candid discussions at various levels in order to develop Japan-Russia relations steadily, even amidst the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
