The Situation of Northwest of Syria
(Statement by Foreign Press Secretary Osuga Takeshi )

September 10, 2018
  1. The Government of Japan is deeply concerned of the growing possibility that a large scale military conflict in the northwest of Syria, namely Idlib province will take place. As there is a large number of civilians including IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) in the area, if conflict erupts, further deterioration of the humanitarian situation such as the increase of refugees and IDPs may occur and it will have negative impact upon the stability of the entire Middle East.
  2. Regarding the possibility of the use of chemical weapons, it is not permissible under any circumstances.
  3. The Government of Japan believes that the crisis in Syria cannot be resolved by military means, and a political solution has to be pursued. The Government of Japan calls on all parties to stop any military actions and to make utmost effort to advance the political process led by the United Nations.
  4. The Government of Japan intends to closely work with the international community to achieve the cessation of all violence and the improvement of humanitarian situation.
