Afghan President Ghani’s announcement of the Afghan government’s second ceasefire with the Taliban

- On August 19, H.E. Dr. Ashraf Ghani, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan made an announcement of the ceasefire with the Taliban for around three months since August 20, conditioned on the Taliban participation. The government of Japan welcomes and supports this announcement as a further progress for the peace process in Afghanistan, following the implementation of a three-day-long ceasefire between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban, which took place last June.
- Japan hopes that the ceasefire between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban will be realized following the announcement of the ceasefire by the government of Afghanistan.
- Realizing peace in Afghanistan is indispensable for the stability and peace in the region. Japan strongly hopes that the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban will achieve the everlasting ceasefire and peace, so that the Afghan people and all stakeholders will deserve a lasting peace after this.
- Japan will continue to provide support for the stability of Afghanistan in the fields of development and security, while working closely with the international community.
