Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan on the General Election in Fiji

1.Japan welcomes that the general election in Fiji, the first that was held after the military coup in December 2006, was conducted in a peaceful manner on 17 September.

2.Japan dispatched election observers to the Multinational Observer Group (MOG), performed monitoring of the election. Japan also supports the positive evaluation by MOG, which states that the conditions were in place for Fijians to exercise their right to vote freely and the outcome of the 2014 Fijian Election is on track “to broadly represent the will of the Fijian voters”.

3.Japan considers the general election as an important step towards the consolidation of democracy in Fiji.

4.Japan will continue to support Fiji’s efforts towards the promotion of democracy and further develop the cooperative relationship between Japan and Fiji.
