Assistance by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security to the Project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

1. On July 17, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security, which was established by the initiative of the Government of Japan, decided to extend assistance totaling 3,296,783.6 US dollars (approximately 270 million yen) to a project entitled "Support to Human Security in Northern Katanga through Early Recovery and Capacity Building of Local Territory of Nyunzu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo".
2. The project is implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This project aims at stabilization of Northern Katanga through improving various types of security, such as economic, food, sanitary and hygienic, environmental, political, personal and community security. The activities will include the following:
— Reinforcing community capacity building in prevention and resolution of conflicts.
— Restoring livelihood means/ economic and agricultural recovery.
— Improving access to quality social services and capacity building in administration and management of social services and infrastructure.
3. This project is expected to promote the human security of the vulnerable population such as the displaced persons and the returnees in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
