Statement by Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on the re-appointment of the IAEA Director General
March 7, 2013
- The IAEA Board of Governors have decided to re-appoint Director General Yukiya AMANO for another term as the Director General of IAEA on March 6 (local time) Board of Governors Meeting in Vienna.
- Since assuming his office in December 2009, Director General Amano has been working actively on North Korea's and Iran's nuclear issues. After the accident at TEPCO's Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, he has provided support to Japan and led the international effort on nuclear safety using lessons learned from the accident, one result of which was the success of the Fukushima Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety organized by Japan in co-sponsorship with the IAEA. Furthermore, he has placed great importance on application of nuclear technology including cancer treatment.
- It is very gratifying that Board of Governors have decided to re-appoint Director General Amano. We look forward to the formal approval of his appointment by the General Conference of the IAEA in September and to his continued and splendid leadership.
[Note 1]
Upon the approval by the General Conference of the IAEA which is to be held from September 16, Director General Amano will take his office starting December 1.
