Opening Remarks

Japan’s Support for Thailand and Myanmar in Response to the Earthquake in Central Myanmar

Mr. KITAMURA Toshihiro, Press Secretary: At the outset, I would like to report the latest situation on the support for Thailand and Myanmar, which has been ongoing in response to the earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28.

Firstly, for Thailand, as issued in the press release yesterday, the Government of Japan will dispatch a team of experts in the field of building from today to April 19, following the recent dispatch of a team of experts in the field of roads. This team of experts will introduce Japan’s experience and strengths in overcoming numerous earthquake disasters in terms of ensuring the earthquake resistance and safety of buildings, and exchange opinions with those concerned in Thailand.

For Myanmar, the second batch of the Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Medical Team, which has been dispatched since April 12 as decided by the Foreign Minister on April 11, commenced its medical relief activities from yesterday, April 15, taking over the duties from the first JDR Medical Team at the site in Mandalay. On that day, approximately 100 people received medical care, bringing the total number of patients treated to approximately 1,300, including those treated by the first team. I have heard that there are always queues in front of the medical facilities, and these medical activities have been directly benefiting the people of Myanmar, as many patients have expressed their gratitude.

We will continue to provide necessary support and cooperation to both countries.

That is all from me.
