Summit on Peace in Ukraine
Mainichi Shimbun, Odanaka: I would like to ask two questions about the Summit on Peace in Ukraine to be held in Switzerland. I will ask each one separately. As to my first question, Ukrainian President Zelensky has issued a statement for the leaders of the U.S. and China to join the peace summit. What is the Government of Japan’s position on this statement?
Ms. KOBAYASHI Maki, Press Secretary: We understand that President Zelensky asked U.S. President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping to join the Summit on Peace in Ukraine to be held in Switzerland, in a video message to the public on May 26.
We recognize that this summit is an important meeting for the international community to present its stance of supporting the efforts of Ukraine toward achieving a just and lasting peace. With attendance by other countries, including those in the Global South, Japan will steadfastly make efforts in coordination with other countries.Mainichi Shimbun, Odanaka: I have a related question. I realize you have already partially answered this question, but I would like to ask about the attending countries in the summit. First, setting aside what level or who will attend, does the Government of Japan intend to attend this summit?
Second, as you just mentioned, there are reports that other countries, including the Global South, are quite neutral on whether or not they will attend this summit. What kind of diplomatic approach, if any, will Japan take toward other countries to ensure the success and proper holding of this summit?Press Secretary Kobayashi: Nothing short of what I have just mentioned, I reiterate that we recognize this summit is an important meeting, and Japan will work together with other participating countries, including those in the Global South.
On the specific diplomatic efforts, unfortunately, I would like to refrain from answering questions here as this is a matter of diplomatic communication. At this time, the Government of Japan has not decided who will attend the summit.
