Extraordinary Press Conference by Foreign Minister Taro Kono
Thursday, December 7, 2017, 2:16 p.m. Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Japanese
Opening Remarks
Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs: Japan supports a two-state solution for the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and believes that the final status of Jerusalem should be settled through negotiations between the parties, based on the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and the relevant agreements between the parties concerned.
Japan appreciates President Trump’s strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace agreement and his support for a two-state solution. Japan also deeply notes the importance of President Trump’s clear acknowledgement that the final status of Jerusalem, including the sovereign boundaries within the city, must be subject to negotiations between the parties concerned.
However, we are concerned that the US announcement could lead to worsening of the environment surrounding the Middle East Peace Process or deterioration of the situation of the Middle East at large. We are carefully watching this issue with great interest.
