Joint Statement on NPDI
November 28, 2012
(Japanese)
The NPDI regrets the postponement of the Conference on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction, which the 2010 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons had made provision in 2012. We fully support the ongoing efforts by the Facilitator to consult broadly with all relevant stakeholders to prepare for a successful conference, to be attended by all states in the region on the basis of arrangements freely arrived at, which we hope will mark the beginning of a confidence-building process in the region. We call upon all States of the region to engage in a spirit of genuine and constructive cooperation. The NPDI recognizes that the convening of a conference is an important and integral part of the final outcome of the successful 2010 NPT Review Conference. However, we are strongly of the view that the postponement of the Conference should not distract States parties from making progress on the implementation of all other elements, commitments and obligations contained in the 2010 Action Plan. We look forward to a productive meeting in 2013 of the Preparatory Committee for the 2015 NPT Review Conference.
