"Special Communicators for a World without Nuclear Weapons"
June 2012
- On 21 September ,2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave the first commissions of "Special Communicators for a World without Nuclear Weapons" to Mr. Akihiro Takahashi from Hiroshima and Mr. Yoshiro Yamawaki from Nagasaki, after the establishment of the commission mechanism.
- This commission mechanism was set up following Prime Minister Kan’s statement at the Peace Ceremonies in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 2010 in which he asked Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) to talk about their actual experiences of the horrible realities of using nuclear weapons at various events internationally under the special designation of "Special Communicators for a World without Nuclear Weapons".
- Recognizing that it is its responsibility, as the only country to have ever suffered atomic bombings, to support the transmission of the Hibakushas’ first-hand experiences about the consequence of the use of nuclear weapons to the international community as well as to future generations, Japan is determined to exercise its leadership, in cooperation with civil society, in pursuing a world without nuclear weapons.
The Mechanism of the "Special Communicator"
The "Special Communicator for a World without Nuclear Weapons" is expected to pass on their experiences about the real consequences of the use of nuclear weapons to the international community as well as to future generations through speaking opportunities at various international events, including atomic bombing exhibitions and other events.
As of May 2012, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a total of 74 commissions for "Special Communicator for a World without Nuclear Weapons" for 38 separate events.
(Note) The opinions expressed by the "Special Communicator(s)" on these occasions do not necessarily represent the views of the Japanese government.
