  1. From 21st to 25th October 2024, the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Japan Coast Guard, organized five-day Capacity Building Executive Programme (CBEP) in Tokyo, Japan for senior officers of maritime law enforcement agencies and related agencies of the ReCAAP Contracting Parties.
  2. At this 7th program, the ReCAAP-ISC explained the situation of incidents at waters in Asia. From the government of Japan, the Japan Coast Guard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and the Cabinet Secretariat participated in the meeting to explain Japan’s maritime security policy, its efforts for combatting piracy and armed robbery against ships, and Japan’s cooperation with littoral states in the field of maritime law enforcement. Participating countries shared their expertise with one another and exchanged views with research institutions and shipping industry associations.
  3. Japan played a leading role in establishing ReCAAP to address piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia and, as a major donor, has been constantly contributing to the ReCAAP ISC’s projects to enhance the capacity of the littoral states. Owing to the efforts of the ISC and the littoral states, the recent number of incidents in Asia became low compared to that at its peak. However, the robbery incidents and others in the straits including Singapore Strait has been of concern. Against this backdrop, Japan appreciates the ReCAAP ISC’s contribution to the safety of Asian seas and continues to play a leading role in fighting against piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia, while utilizing the framework of ReCAAP and cooperating with the relevant countries.
