Tokyo has developed a long history and tradition since the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu established his political headquarters here in Edo in 1603 after conquering the entire nation.

In the 18th century, Edo became the world's most populous city, with over a million people, and developed a mature urban system that included an efficient water and land-based distribution network and advanced recycling system.

In the course of its development as a modern metropolis, Tokyo has experienced massive destruction as a result of a major earthquake and war, but it has recovered each time, and since taking the opportunity presented by the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, it has improved its infrastructure remarkably in recent decades. In the course of this development, Tokyo has faced various problems associated with urbanization such as air pollution, a rapidly growing volume of refuse, worsening traffic congestion, etc., but the city remains determined in its resolve to tackle these problems, and conditions are improving.
