With 3,630,000 residents (as of November 2007), Yokohama City follows the 23 wards of Tokyo as Japan's second largest city in terms of population size. Located southwest of the capital, Tokyo, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Yokohama covers an area of approximately 435km².

Yokohama Station, at the heart of the city's commercial and transportation center, is about 30km from central Tokyo. For international travelers, Yokohama can be reached in about 90 minutes by train from Narita Airport and in about 25 minutes by limousine from Haneda Airport, which has direct flights to and from Seoul and Shanghai.

Shin-Yokohama Station on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line, located in the geographic center of Yokohama, is known as the gateway to the southwestern part of the national capital region.
