Tokyo is Japan's largest industrial city with an output accounting for a little less than 20% of the nation's total GDP, meaning that the city's economic activity is equivalent to that of the entire nation of Canada. The head office and financial functions of thousands of companies are concentrated here, as are the lion's share of Japan's education and research organizations, and the mass media, etc., keeping Tokyo at the cutting edge of culture and lifestyle trends.

At the same time, 99% of the business premises in Tokyo belong to small or medium-sized companies, which function as the main engine of industrial development. Furthermore, Tokyo is Japan's most prominent base for international business, accounting for over 60% of all premises of foreign companies doing business in Japan as well as attracting over half of all foreign visitors.
