Fukuoka Prefecture developed rapidly after the end of World War II as a distribution center for the Kyushu district. Various administrative and economic functions are also concentrated in Fukuoka, and it is now the economic and financial center of the Kyushu-Okinawa region. |
The fertile Chikugo Plains, located in southern Fukuoka, is one of Japan's prominent grain belts. Agriculture is thriving in the area, and aside from rice, rush, fruits, vegetable and garden plants are among the crops grown. The volume of the eggplant and strawberry harvest is second in the nation. Many other varieties of vegetables such as celery, cauliflower and broccoli, as well as fruits, including persimmon and kiwi, are also grown.
Seafood is abundant in Fukuoka Prefecture, which is surrounded by the ocean on three sides. The prefecture's total annual fishery haul is approximately 136-thousand tons, ranked twentieth in Japan (as of 1994). Fukuoka's Hakata Port is the base for both inshore and deep-sea trawl fishery, and the haul is among the nation's top in term of ports.
